The Emergency Toilet Project

Educate on the management of sanitation services in emergencies

Several recent disasters in the United States and around the world have caused damage to portions of water and wastewater systems, leaving major metropolitan areas without access to clean water and functioning sanitation for extended periods. I Improving post-disaster sanitation management and educating communities on how to best manage human waste therefore becomes essential.

For this reason, in 2016 the Regional Disaster Preparedness Organization (RDPO) of the Portland Metropolitan Region (USA), with the financial support of the United States Department of Homeland Security, developed guidelines for the management of sanitation services -sanitation following an earthquake from which the Emergency Toilet Project was created to provide information to the public on how to live without running water and functioning toilets for a long period (days or months) following a strong earthquake.
