January 24, International Education Day
Education is a fundamental tool for growth for a person as an individual and as a member of a society. Too often children, girls and adolescents see this right violated, especially in the poorest countries.
In fact, there are approximately 244 million children and adolescents in the world who do not go to school, 617 million who cannot read and do basic mathematics, less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa who have completed lower secondary school and approximately four million refugee children and young people do not go to school.
The International Day of Education, established by the United Nations to celebrate the role of education in peace and development, invites us to reflect on the importance of education as a right for all, as a public good and as a fundamental means for fighting inequalities , poverty, marginalization and exploitation and for the achievement of all the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
