NAPO - Safety Smile
Napo is the hero of a series of animated films created to raise awareness of occupational health and safety issues. The Napo films are an ideal way to spread the basic principles of occupational safety and health (OSH) in an engaging and informal way. Napo's motto for a safer, healthier and better workplace is 'safety with a smile'.
Napo is the result of an original idea developed by a small group of occupational safety and health (OSH) communication experts, responding to the need for high quality information material, not restricted by national borders and adapted to the different cultures, languages and practical needs of working people. That is why all the films in the series are made without the use of words, so that they can be understood by everyone. Each film is co-produced by a number of European institutions. The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work in Bilbao (Spain) financed the development of the website.
The films cover a wide range of topics related to occupational safety and health, such as:
- heat stress;
- dust-related risks;
- road-related risks;
- the risk of falls;
- occupational risks related to the use of chemicals;
LEARNING ABOUT SAFETY AT SCHOOL WITH NAPO
Using the hugely popular Napo character, EU-OSHA (the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work), together with the Napo consortium, has also created a series of teaching tools for teachers related to occupational safety and health (OSH), with the aim of presenting health and safety topics to primary school students in a didactic, yet fun and imaginative approach using Napo episodes.
Teachers are given a choice of activities, and are provided with the necessary resources, as well as some hints on how to evaluate student performance. The lessons have been designed in a flexible way to fit into the subjects on the current syllabus, with the aim of exploring fun, engaging and informative topics that are useful both at home and at school, such as safety signs and the identification of risk and hazard situations.
