Information to be provided on the use of cookies

This website, owned by Save the Children Italia ETS, data controller pursuant to and for the purposes of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of April 27, 2016, on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (known as the "GDPR"), uses cookies. This information provides guidance on how cookies are used and how they can be controlled by the user

By using this website, you accept the use of cookies in accordance with this information. In particular, you accept the use of technical and functional cookies for the purposes described below

What are cookies?

Cookies are pieces of information saved on the hard drive of the user's terminal and sent by the user's browser to a web server, which refer to the use of the network. As a result, they allow you to know the services, sites visited, and options that have been expressed while browsing the web. In other words, cookies are small files containing letters and numbers that are downloaded to the user's computer or mobile device when visiting a website. Cookies are then sent back to the original site on each subsequent visit, or to another website that recognizes these cookies. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognize the user's device this information is therefore not provided spontaneously and directly, but leaves a trace of the user's browsing activity. Cookies perform various functions and allow you to navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences and, more generally, improving your experience. They can also help to ensure that the advertisements displayed during navigation are of interest to the user and that the marketing activities carried out are in line with their preferences, avoiding promotional initiatives that are unwelcome or not in line with the user's needs

While browsing a website, you may also receive cookies on your device that are sent from different websites or web servers (so-called "third parties"), on which certain elements (e.g., images, maps, sounds, specific links to pages on other domains) present on the website you are visiting may reside. Therefore, from this point of view, there may be:

  1. Direct cookies, sent directly from this website to the user's device
  2. Third-party cookies, originating from a third party but sent on our behalf. This website uses third-party cookies to facilitate the analysis of our website and its use (as described below).

Furthermore, depending on the purpose of use of cookies, they can be divided into:

1. Technical cookies: these are used to enable the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network or to provide a service expressly requested by the user. They are not used for other purposes. The category of technical cookies, whose use does not require the user's consent, includes:

  • a) Navigation or session cookies: these ensure normal navigation and use of the website (e.g., to access website content). The use of these cookies (which are not stored permanently on the user's device and are automatically deleted when the browser is closed) is strictly limited to the transmission of session identifiers (consisting of random numbers generated by the server) necessary to enable the safe and efficient exploration of the site. These cookies can avoid the use of IT techniques that could potentially compromise the confidentiality of users' browsing and do not allow the acquisition of personal data identifying the user.
  • b) Analytics cookies: these are used only to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users who visit the site and how they visit it
  • c) Functionality cookies: these allow the user to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (e.g., language) to improve the service provided to the user.

2. Profiling cookies: these are designed to create profiles relating to the user and are used to send targeted promotional messages based on the preferences expressed while browsing the web. These cookies can only be used for these purposes with the user's consent. This site does not install profiling cookies

How cookies are used by this website

The following table summarizes how this website and third parties use cookies. These uses include the use of cookies to:

  1. know the total number of visitors on an ongoing basis, as well as the types of browsers (e.g., Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer/Microsoft Edge) and operating systems (e.g., Windows or MacOS) used;
  2. monitor the performance of the site, including how visitors use it, as well as to improve its functionality;
  3. personalize and improve the online user experience.

What categories of cookies we use and how they can be managed by the user

The types of cookies used can be classified into one of the categories listed in the table below, which allows the user to give their consent or change it (if previously given) to accept the various types of cookies:

Essential website cookies (session and navigation) These cookies are essential for proper navigation and to use the site's features. These cookies do not collect personal information that can be used for marketing purposes, nor do they store the sites visited. The use of these cookies (which are not stored permanently on the user's device and are automatically deleted when the browser is closed) is strictly limited to the transmission of session identifiers (consisting of random numbers generated by the server) necessary to enable the safe and efficient exploration of the site. This category of cookies cannot be disabled.
Direct functionality cookies These cookies allow us to remember choices you make (such as your language or location) and provide enhanced, personalized features. The information these cookies collect may be anonymized and does not track your browsing activity on other websites. This category of cookies cannot be disabled.
Analytics and third-party advertising cookies

These cookies, including cache cookies, are set by third parties and are used to collect information about how visitors use the site, including the number of visitors, the sites they come from, and the pages they visit on our website. We use this information to compile reports and improve our website; this allows us, for example, to know about any errors detected by users and to ensure they have a smooth browsing experience, so they can easily find what they are looking for. In general, these cookies remain on the visitor's computer until they are deleted. Below, we provide detailed information on how cookies installed by third parties are used.

Google Analytics: Google Analytics is a web traffic analysis service provided by Google, Inc. ("Google"). These are third-party cookies collected and managed anonymously to monitor and improve the performance of the host site (performance cookies). Google Analytics uses cookies to collect and analyze anonymous information about website usage behavior (including the user's IP address). This information is collected by Google Analytics, which processes it for the purpose of compiling reports on website activity. This site uses Google's analytics tool to monitor or collect and analyze statistical information about access/visits to the site. This type of cookie collects information about users' activity on the site, how they arrived at the site, and the pages they visited. Save the Children uses this information provided by Google Analytics for statistical analysis, to improve the site and simplify its use, as well as to monitor its proper functioning. Google may, however, use cookies for its own advertising activities and also communicate this information to third parties where required by law or where such third parties process the information on Google's behalf.

In essence, Google may use this information, combining it with other information already available for purposes other than purely technical ones (functionality or session), subject to the user's consent. To learn more, access the link in the column on the right to manage your options and/or set your browser as described below.
