The Emergency Toilet Project
Educating on the management of sanitation services in emergencies
several recent disasters in the United States and around the world have caused damage to portions of water and wastewater systems, leaving major metropolitan areas without access to clean water and functioning sanitation facilities for extended periods of time. Improving post-disaster sanitation management and educating communities on how to best manage human waste is therefore essential
For this reason, in 2016, the Regional Disaster Preparedness Organization (RDPO) of the Portland Metropolitan Area (USA), with financial support from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, developed guidelines for managing sanitation services following an earthquake which led to the creation of the Emergency Toilet Project to provide information to the public on how to live without running water and functioning toilets for a long period (days or months) following a major earthquake.
