june 5, World Environment Day
From pollution to solution
Every year, more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide, half of which is intended for single use. Of this, less than 10% is recycled. It is estimated that 19-23 million tons end up in lakes, rivers, and seas every year. This is approximately the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers all together. Microplastics—tiny plastic particles up to 5 mm in diameter—find their way into food, water, and air. It is estimated that every person on the planet, including children, consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year, and many more if inhalation is taken into account.
Discarded or incinerated single-use plastic damages human health and biodiversity and pollutes every ecosystem, from mountain tops to the bottom of the ocean. world Environment Day aims to raise awareness of this global issue, to which we all, from governments to businesses to individual citizens, must contribute in order to find a solution
