Play with fire
Objectives:
- Recognise human responsibility in disasters
- Get to know what to do in case of fire
- Stimulate creativity and imagination
STEP BY STEP
Before starting
What are the first images that come to your mind when you think of fire?
The topic of this activity is introduced with this question. Boys and girls are asked to think of all the images/situations in which fire is a positive element and those in which it becomes an enemy.
Playing cards
This activity is carried out in small groups. From what emerged in the previous discussion, each group should draw a fire in one of the following contexts:
- Fire at home
- Fire in the mountains
- Fire in a public building
- Fire at school
The image of the fire in each of the contexts should be portrayed on a card that will become a Scenario card.
Once the Scenario cards have been made, the Actions cards will then be created. On four cardboards, each group will have to write four (4) misbehaviors that can cause the previously illustrated fire situation.
Alternatively, you can print out and cut out the available Playing Cards (see attachment “Playing with Fire - Playing Cards” below).
Let's play!
Once all the cards have been made or printed, they are arranged on a table. Both Senario and Action cards will be in place. Everyone chooses an illustrated card (they cannot choose the one created by their own group) and will have to find the 4 cards with the relevant actions related to the chosen scenario. The group that can locate all the correct cards wins.
Quiz time
From the incorrect behaviors identified for each scenario, there is a discussion of what are instead may be the correct behaviors to adopt for each scenario.
The teacher gives the class a quiz to test preparedness (see attachment “Playing with Fire - Quiz” below).
Concluding thoughts
To conclude, the class reviews the correct and incorrect behaviors in the event of a fire. The teacher can wrap up the answers on the interactive whiteboard or a poster to keep in the classroom.
