Who makes the difference?
Objectives:
- Understand the role of the citizen as a bringer of change
- Stimulate participation and creativity
STEP BY STEP
BEFORE STARTING
The teacher asks the class: what does it mean to make a difference in an area?
After a brief discussion with the class, the teacher proposes to the class characters who stand out for their commitment in different subjects that they want to work on and writes a small description for each character. The class has to associate each character with the correct description.
At this point, the teacher points out that all the characters, each in their own field, have contributed to the activities included in the disaster management cycle.
The characters can be freely chosen by the teacher or these attachemnt "Who makes the difference - Characters" (below) with the related descriprions in the attachment "Who makes the difference - Characters and decriptions" can be used.
FINDING THE CHARACTER
This part will be carried out individually at home. Following the example of the characters seen at school, others are searched for and information related to their work or activities is sought. Videos can be watched and interviews listened to. At the end of the search, a small sketch of each person is prepared containing the following information:
- First and last name
- Date of birth
- Nationality
- Sector in which he/she works
- Contribution he/she has made to his/her sector
- Contribution to the disaster management cycle
- Curiosity
Back in the classroom, the sketches are shared. The teacher will take care to note down on the interactive whiteboard the name, sector and brief description of each character's contribution to the disaster management cycle.
COSTRUCTION OF THE CITIZEN
Starting from the sketch of famous people just shared, the teacher asks the class: "What are the characteristics that make each person a good citizen?" "What are the flaws that make bad citizens?" "How does a good citizen contribute to the disaster management cycle?" "How does a bad citizen contribute?"
The class is divided into two groups: the first group draws a silhouette showing all the good citizens' qualities, while the second group writes all the flaws on a second silhouette.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
Reflection focuses on the characteristics that bring each of us closer to the identikit of the good and bad citizen. What actions that we perform every day make us good citizens? What should we do differently?
