50 things to do before you turn 11

The Nature Deficit, or the distancing of younger generations from natural elements, is becoming increasingly evident, and the WWF is launching an awareness campaign for children

The younger generations are losing touch with nature. This phenomenon is known as "nature deficit," or separation from natural elements, which scholars now recognize as a "disease of our time" for the younger generations

Research conducted by the National Trust in the United Kingdom has shown, for example, that, especially among the younger generations, physical detachment from experiences in nature is also reflected in everyday language. In the United Kingdom, over the past 25 years, some commonly used words, including web, cloud, tweet, and stream, have gradually taken on a meaning far removed from their original connection to nature: these terms are now associated almost exclusively with the digital world. In everyday language, only 1% of respondents associate the word 'tweet' with birdsong, only 7% link the word 'web' to the web woven by spiders, while 'cloud' has lost its original meaning in at least three-quarters of those who use it in 30 years. Even the term 'stream', which in the 1990s almost always referred to the river environment, now does so for only 36% of people. These meanings are therefore in danger of extinction, highlighting how influential the replacement of the natural world with the artificial world is in everyday life

To ensure that children have contact with nature, the WWF is launching the 'Nature Classroom Project' and providing a list of '50 things to do before you turn 11' to ensure that experience is the determining factor in nurturing the younger generation's interest and desire to protect nature
